Before we had "Def Comedy Jam," "Martin," or any of the other major avenues for Black Comedians to regularly showcase their talents to the world, there was Sinbad. And almost only Sinbad. Though Sinbad's persona had a good dose of Coonish "Non-Threatening Negro" in him, his comedy was Real & Very Old School. In the clip below, Sinbad gives us a great dose of humor-speaking on everything from college life, to bad jheri curls to beatings from mama. Somewhat forgotten from comedy history, Sinbad absolutely paved the way for so many others to come a short time later. Salute.

RARE 1959 LECTURE FROM THE HONORABLE ELIJAH MUHAMMADFor most, outside of Nation Of Islam rank & file, the majority of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad's teaching have been received via his books and/or via his students (Malcolm X & Louis Farrakhan). But thanks to the wonderful world of YouTube, we now have a taste of Elijah at his best. This 1959 lecture-given in Newark, New Jersey-features a relatively young Messenger providing rather fiery rhetoric on all sorts of topics. Take into consideration that this is right around the time that the NOI moved to center-stage of the American consciousness, as a CBS documentary (The Hate That Hate Produced) would launch The Honorable Elijah Muhammad & his young Minister Malcolm X into mainstream consciousness. In crazy times as these, we need so much more like this! Listen, Learn, Grow, Elevate... In a time where the vast majority of our entertainers lack any form of culture; but instead exist simply to push consumerism & other forms of mindless fuckery, a man like Robert Nesta Marley is what is needed today. Unfortunately, like so many other Cultural Icons (i.e. Malcolm, Martin, Che, etc), even his likeness & legacy sometimes gets pimped out in the name of capitalism also. Bob Marley was a FREEDOM FIGHTER. He stood for Truth & Righteousness! Yeah, some of his songs were just about good vibes, fun & positive energy. But the bulk of his material spoke to the struggle for Human Rights & Freedom. Attached below is an interview with Gil Noble, in which Marley explains his views on Religion, Culture, African vs Jamaican Heritage, Humbleness, and of course music. HAPPY BORNDAY ROBERT NESTA MARLEY!!! 1946-1981 DJ PREMIER HAS GOT STORIES ABOUT ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE RAPPERS...Hip Hop is likely the only Music Genre that just does not honor its Pioneers. Hip Hop's History, Its Stories & Traditions seem to have been sold off to a corporate monster that doesn't give a damn about it. As a result, the classic moments & music of Hip Hop's Golden Era are like precious minerals that one has to dig to unearth. So words can't express how refreshing it can be when a random YouTube stroll brings me to this. The Immortal DJ PREMIER telling magical stories about his interactions with & observations of artists such as Tupac, Eazy E, Jay Z, Biggie, Kanye West, Dr. Dre, KRS-ONE, GURU, Today's Artists and more... KNOW THE HISTORY. KNOW THE CULTURE. RESPECT THE ARCHITECTS... LOOKING BACK AT A SLIGHTLY MILITANT BILL COSBY IN 1968Honestly I'm not even sure how I found this; but here we have a young Bill Cosby schooling the masses on the True History of Black People in this World. With a slightly militant tone, Mr. Huxtable delivers a stricking oratory on the wonderful contributions that Black People have brought to the world-but rarely ever received any mention in the history books. The most insightful area of discussion, however, deals with the propaganda used to justify the treatment of Black Men, Women & Children in America-and the negative impact of the way Black People have been portrayed in movies & television. Trust me, Bill goes in!!! Topics range from African contributions to Art & Civilization, to the myth of slave traders "civilizing" the savage Africans, to the psychological impact of racial imagery on children, to propaganda movies like D.W. Griffith's 1915 film "The Birth of a Nation" which led to the rebirth of the modern-era Klu Klux Klan. Like I said. Mr. Huxtable goes HARD on this one. Enjoy. |
